What is a JAM Card?

The JAM Card is a physical card or app that allows a user to ask for ‘Just a Minute’ of patience in social or business situations.

How do I get one?

You can download the app from the Play Store or Apple. You can order one physical JAM Card by clicking here or by phoning NOW Group on +44 (0) 28 9043 6400.

Is it free?

Yes! One JAM Card is available for free as a plastic card or an app for your phone. The JAM Card Lanyard you need to pay for, but the card is always free. You can even have the card and app if you like!

How do I use it?

The JAM Card can be used in any scenario or personal interaction to convey discreetly that you need a little more time and understanding. For example, you can use it on public transport and in shops and banks.  Many transport companies, retailers and utilities have trained their staff to be JAM Card friendly so that they can offer optimal customer service to card users.

The card says ‘Just A Minute’ on one side, and you can choose which message you would like on the other side of your card: I have autism, I am autistic, I have a condition, I have a learning difficulty/disability and I have an intellectual disability.

What businesses recognise it?

The list of organisations is growing all the time across the UK and Ireland.  We have recently welcomed Lidl, EuroSpar and Spar.  The banking sector includes Danske Bank, AIB, Bank of Ireland and permanent tsb.  Transport for Ireland and Translink are also JAM Card friendly.

Who uses it?

The JAM Card can be used by people with learning disabilities, autism, or a communication barrier to tell others that they need a "minute" in a discreet and easy way when they are in environments, such as supermarkets or public transport.

It can also be used by people with head injuries or who have had a stroke and by people who, for other reasons, might need a little extra time and help to communicate effectively with others.

Where can I use it?

You can use it in a wide range of places: In shops,  on public transport, in banks, cafés, restaurants, hotels and museums.

Do I need to have a diagnosis to use it?

No, you don't need to have a diagnosis but by completing the application form you will be asked to specify why you need the JAM Card (what kind of communication barrier you have).

Is JAM Card only for people with autism?

JAM Card was originally developed by NOW Group participants for those with learning disabilities and difficulties. However, it can be used by anyone with a communication barrier.

For instance, JAM Card can be used by people with Asperger’s or autism. It can also be used by those who have a brain injury and people who otherwise feel self-conscious about their ability to effectively communicate when engaging with others.

The card says ‘Just A Minute’ on one side, and you can choose which message you would like on the other side of your card – you can simple have ‘I have a condition’.
